What to Expect When Choosing a Countertop Material

Choosing a countertop starts with more than finding a color you like. When you visit our showroom, we help you compare materials based on how the space will be used, your maintenance preferences, design goals, budget, cabinetry, backsplash, and other features within the room.

Natural stones such as granite and marble offer unique colors, veining, and movement, which means individual slabs can vary considerably. Engineered quartz provides different advantages, including a more consistent appearance and generally lower maintenance requirements. Seeing these materials in person can make it easier to understand those differences before making a final decision.

We recommend bringing cabinet doors, tile samples, or other design elements with you when possible. Our designers can use those pieces to help you compare stone, colors, finishes, and other options so your countertop works with the entire space rather than being selected on its own.

Natural Stone vs. Engineered Stone Countertops

Natural and engineered stone can both create durable, attractive countertops, but there are important differences to consider. Granite and marble are natural materials quarried from the earth, so variations in color, veining, movement, and mineral patterns are expected. Those natural differences mean each slab has its own individual character.

Engineered quartz combines manufactured materials to create a surface with more controlled and consistent colors and patterns. Quartz is also non-porous and generally requires less routine maintenance than many natural stones. Natural stone may require periodic sealing depending on the material and how the surface is used.

We work with both natural and engineered materials, so our goal isn’t to steer every customer toward one type. Instead, we help you compare the appearance, maintenance requirements, performance, and design possibilities of each so you can choose a countertop that fits your priorities.

What is Granite?

Granite is an igneous rock of volcanic origin and is composed of 30% quartz and 60% feldspar, which gives it a high range of hardness. It is very resistant to high wear, with superior abrasion resistance and compressive strength. It is available in a wide range of colors. Each color and slab will vary from one another in color, flow, grain, tone, spotting, veining, shade, and texture. Because these products are natural, fractures are common, but not defects in the stone.

Polished

This smooth, reflective surface draws out the color and texture for a rich look. It’s the least porous finish option, which is great for spills. But the shiny surface also accents any imperfections (and crumbs). Polished is the most popular, perhaps due in part to ease of cleaning.

Honed

While still smooth, this finish is not shiny and reflective. Though a honed finish doesn’t bring out the color as much, it does cut down on glare and mask imperfections. The surface is slightly more porous.

Leather

Leather finishes sit right between polished and honed in terms of glossiness and texture. A relatively new style, this finish leaves the surface slightly matte while highlighting the natural contours and colors of the stone.

Granite vs. Quartz Countertops

Granite and quartz are both popular countertop materials, but they provide different characteristics. Granite is a natural stone, so every slab has its own combination of color, mineral patterns, veining, and movement. For homeowners who want a naturally unique surface, those variations are often part of granite’s appeal.

Quartz is engineered and generally provides greater consistency in color and pattern. It is also non-porous and typically does not require sealing, making it attractive to homeowners who prioritize easier maintenance. Granite is also highly durable, but periodic sealing may be recommended depending on the particular stone and how it is used.

Neither material is automatically better for every kitchen. We help you compare appearance, maintenance, durability, lifestyle, and budget so you can choose a surface that fits how you actually use your space.

Can I use my stone countertops for hot pots or pans?

Stone countertops like granite and quartzite are heat-resistant and can handle brief contact with hot pots or pans. However, it is not recommended to make this a regular habit, as repeated exposure to high temperatures can lead to cracking, discoloration, or thermal shock over time. To protect the surface and extend its lifespan, it is best to use a trivet, potholder, or heat pad when placing hot cookware on your countertops. While stone is durable, taking this extra step helps preserve its appearance and long-term performance.

Stone surfaces should be cleaned with mild dish soap, warm water, or cleaners specifically designed for natural stone. Harsh chemicals like bleach, ammonia, or acidic cleaners can damage the surface and dull the finish over time. Timeless Stone Fabrication, Inc. recommends using gentle, non-abrasive products to maintain the appearance and longevity of your countertops.
